Students Can Contribute to Open Source and Earn $4500

posted Thursday, 2 June 2005
Google is sponsoring a project called the summer of code. Through this project, a student can earn $4500 for successfully completing an open source project contribution. The program's intent is to introduce students to the world of open source development. The open source project to which the student contributes also receives a $500 award from google upon completion of the student's contribution.

The participating projects include; The Apache Software Foundation, Drupal, Jabber, JXTA, Live Journal, Project Looking Glass, Open Office, XWiki, and many more. The complete list of participating projects can be found on the summer of code homepage. Each of the participating projects also has a list of ideas for potential contributions on the summer of code site.

This is a great incentive to get new developers engaged in the open source community early in their career. Every enterprise developer should have a strong awareness of what is available in the open source community. The open source community has become our mechanism for achieve cross-enterprise code reuse.
